Achieving Balance
“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.”
-Thomas Merton
“I believe that being successful means having a balance of success stories across the many areas of your life. You can’t truly be considered successful in your business life if your home life is in shambles.”
-Zig Ziglar
For me, summer time is all about regaining a healthy balance in life. Apart from the fact that I’m a teacher and enjoy summers off, I think summer time itself brings a sense of freedom, balance, longer hours of sunlight, and more opportunities for exploration for most people. Summertime brought me the idea of creating The Other Side blog.
The Other Side is being created for a few reasons. First, I’ve had some down time this summer to enjoy reading blogs from friends and strangers who, in some cases, have become friends. I’ve enjoyed the insights and perspectives; I’ve learned a lot. I also love the idea of chronicling events to archive and reminisce about later.
Secondly, being responsible for providing content on The Other Side gives me a greater sense of ownership in 90 Revolutions and well as a creative outlet. Endurance training, competing, and injury prevention are Steve’s passions. I’d rather catch my hair on fire than try to clip into pedals and race off for the second leg of a triathlon in front of a group of spectators. And, I don’t know the first thing about biomechanics. We don’t share the same strengths and wiring, and I like it that way. Otherwise, I’d have married myself, and that’s no fun.
Thirdly, Steve and I both strive for a balanced lifestyle. Our target population is not professional athletes who eat, sleep, and breath this stuff. It’s the family men, the healthy mamas, the middle aged people who want to get back in shape and embrace a challenge, and the young professionals who like to push themselves, but who also have a life outside of training and competing. The content that will comprise The Other Side will be things that are associated with the endurance lifestyle, but ancillary things that support a balanced lifestyle.
Lastly, it will give people a chance to get to know us beyond bike fits and PT advice. I love behind the scenes stuff. It makes me feel more involved, appreciative, and connected. Maybe it stems from years of watching Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood as a child and now watching it with our son. I felt as though Mr. Roger’s was a favorite uncle or somethings. He’d tell stories, and take his “friends” to places like the toilet paper factory to get a behind the scenes viewpoint. Do you know how TP is made? I do.
School is going to be starting in a couple short weeks, but I hope to maintain the balance I’ve enjoyed this summer. I hope to write about our experiences and welcome you to our neighborhood. Hopefully it will be entertaining, and you’ll learn something that will help to provide balance in your life.
