Don’t Lie, & Don’t Been a Stalker
I was driving down the road one summer day, and I caught the last part of a radio commercial for a free Anthony Robbins product that would reportedly help business owners to maximize results. I thought, “That sounds good. It’s free, we have a product launch coming up, and Steve will be so proud that I’ve taken initiative.” So, I called the 1-800 number. I was fully prepared to just give my e-mail address because, after all, the commercial stated that callers would simply need to provide an email address after a recording and life-saving information would be sent immediately. Well, that turned out to be a bold lie.
A very much alive human answered the call (I know, as opposed to a dead human) and hit me with a barrage of questions about our business, goals, and profits to date. I thought,” Woooh! Stranger Danger!” First of all, you guys lied to get me to call. (I know; I should have been less naive.) Secondly, you’re a little aggressive. (Actually, a lot aggressive.) And thirdly (which I soon found out), you guys blasted me with two robo calls a day for the next week. Apparently, after more than a week of getting my voice mail, you got the message. Needless to say, I have a much diminished view of Anthony Robbins and will probably forever regard him as a kook just based upon this experience alone.
I’ve always valued genuine relationships before. I’m not calculating in a what’s-in-it-for- me type of way. I’m honest, perhaps to a fault sometimes (just ask my sister). I like to keep it real (just ask my high school students). I take great care to surround myself with people that hold my same values. Take it or leave it. As for Tony Robbins and his business “gifts”, no thanks, I’ll leave it.
